THE TOWN LAKE ANIMAL CENTER
AUSTINTOWN LAKE ANIMAL CENTER, (Kill Facility):
- 1156 W Cesar Chavez, Austin, TX 512-972-6045.
- Town Lake Animal Center is the only impoundment facility in Travis County. If you have lost your pet, you must go there as soon as possible to search for and reclaim your pet.
- If your pet arrives at Town Lake Animal Center wearing an identification tag, a Pet Registration tag or a rabies tag, a staff member will attempt to reach you, (this cannot be guaranteed). These lost pets are held for a minimum of 10 days (before being killed.) TLAC staff will attempt to reach you, but they are very full of stray animals and extremely busy so don't depend on them contacting you! Remember that tags and collars are often lost.
- Stray animals are held for a minimum of three days before they run the risk of being killed. Wearing a rabies tag will only give them the required 3 days rather than the 10 days as many local veterinarans believe.
- Look in every pen/run (inside and out) for your pet. Keep in mind that you may not recognize your pet immediately, as he may be thinner or dirtier than usual.
- Ask about the animals in the quarantine sections not open to public viewing. The pet may be in the RO area, (Rabies Observation, your pet may have bitten the animal control officer under stress). Your pet may be in the Isolation Area, (for instance if your pet was hit by a car or has been bitten by another animal or behaving oddly), and your pet may be in the vet area (perhaps your pet has been hurt and is receiving care), etc... Don't rely on another's description of an animal inside this area of TLAC! Insist, (politely), on admittance to this area to be certain that your pet is not within.
- Fill out the LOST BOOK. Be very descriptive about your pet's physical appearance. Bring and leave a photo, if you have one. Look through the FOUND BOOK. These books need to be updated by you every month.
Although your pet is listed in the LOST book, do not depend on that to be sure that your pet will be identified if s/he is brought into the TLAC facility.
Be sure to describe your pet clearly!
-gender (male, female)
-color
-approx. weight (small, med and large are not enough)
-describe the pets ears (on a dog are they are flap type ear, a standing up type ear)
-type of tail
-when your pet went missing
-where the pet was last seen
-breed, but this in not always reliable enough which is why you need to be specific in your description.

ONLINE PICTURES AT THE TOWN LAKE ANIMAL CENTER
The pound has online pictures of some of the animals within Town Lake Animal Center. Pictures of injured animals or animals in the Rabies Observation Area are not available to the public. There is a paper posted with a description of the animals inside Rabies Observation. Descriptions of the same animal vary wildly from person to person! Don't rely on a piece of paper for descriptions of animals within the areas not accessibe to the Austin public! Be persistent, but polite and you will get into the Rabies Observation area.
