File a lost pet report with every shelter within a sixty-mile radius of your home. Check them in person - don't rely on their recordings or even a person answering the phone. They are busy and make mistakes. If there is not a shelter in your community, contact the local Police Department. Be able to provide these agencies with an accurate description and a recent photograph of your pet.

SHELTERS IN AND AROUND AUSTIN

AUSTIN

TOWN LAKE ANIMAL CENTER, (Kill Facility)

  • Town Lake Animal Center is the only impoundment facility in Travis County. If you have lost your pet, you must go there as soon as possible to search for and reclaim the pet.
  • If your pet arrives at Town Lake Animal Center wearing an identification tag, Pet Registration tag or a rabies tag, a staff member will attempt to reach you, (not guaranteed).
  • These lost pets are held for a minimum of ten days (not including the day of arrival) while TLAC staff will attempt to contact the guardians.
  • Stray animals are held for a minimum of three days even if they are wearing a rabies tag. If your animal is injured or became aggressive, they may be in the Rabies Observation area that is not open to the public. Don't rely on another's description! Insist, (politely), on admittance to this area to be certain that your pet is not within.
